Abstract

This study examines the interaction between tourists and cultural symbols in the Turkistan region from a multilayered perspective within the context of souvenir items. Symbols such as the Camel Figure, Saz-Sırnay, Pomegranate Motif, Whip (Kamşı), and Wolf Claw, which represent the rich cultural heritage of Turkistan, are approached not only as products of traditional craftsmanship but also as symbolic values reflecting the region’s historical memory. The research evaluates the origins of these symbols, their semantic fields within cultural memory, their place in social practices, and their contribution to identity formation in the modern era. Qualitative data obtained through observation and semi-structured interviews reveal that tourists value not only the aesthetic aspects of souvenirs but also the cultural narratives embedded within these symbols. According to participant statements, these symbols are perceived as cultural mediators that allow visitors to feel the spirit of the region and give deeper meaning to their travel experience. For the local community, these symbols serve as carriers of identity that contribute to the preservation of traditional values and their transmission across generations. The findings of the study demonstrate that souvenirs function as tools of cultural communication beyond their economic value, and that Turkistan’s cultural symbols establish a meaningful bridge between the region and its visitors. In this regard, the study contributes to the reevaluation of the role of cultural symbols in tourism and highlights the significance of souvenir practices for the sustainability of cultural identity in the contemporary period.
