THE STUDY OF AHMAD YASAWI’S HERITAGE IN AZERBAIJANI LITERARY STUDIES

The article examines the history and main stages of the study of Ahmed Yasawi’s heritage in Azerbaijani literary studies. The purpose of the research is to systematize the formation and development of scholarly interest in Ahmed Yasawi’s legacy and to identify the principal approaches to its interpretation. The study distinguishes three major stages: the 1920s–1930s, the 1990s, and research conducted from the 2000s onwards. It demonstrates that during the first stage Yasawi’s name entered Azerbaijani scholarly discourse through the works of Emin Abid, Salman Mumtaz and other researchers. During the Soviet period, the study of Sufism, religious-philosophical heritage and the common Turkic spiritual tradition was restricted by ideological frameworks. Following the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence, growing interest in historical memory, Turkic identity and the spiritual foundations of national literature contributed to the revival and expansion of Yasawi studies. Based on the works of Yashar Garayev, Pasha Alioglu, Sarkhan Khaveri, Bakhlul Khalilov, Ali Shamil, Elman Guliyev and other scholars, the article explores the connections between the Yasawi tradition and Azerbaijani classical literature, Sufism, ashug poetry, the vujudname genre and the broader Turkic literary and spiritual tradition. The study concludes that Yasawism should not be regarded as a local phenomenon but as an important component of the broader spiritual system of the Turkic world. Yasawi’s heritage plays a significant role in preserving cultural memory and spiritual continuity and in understanding Turkic identity and literary succession.
