SUFI MUHAMMAD GENIMAND AND THE YASAVI TARIQUAT: A SOURCE‑CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE NASABNAMA

This article presents a source-critical and textual analysis of manuscript No. 39915 titled “Shajara wa Maqamati Khoja Ahmad Yasawi,” preserved in the manuscript collection of the Astan Quds Razavi Library at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, Islamic Republic of Iran. Dated to the 8th/14th century, specifically 729 AH / 1329 CE, this nasabnama is an important source for studying the historical and spiritual continuity, silsila structure, and mechanisms of Sufi legitimation within the Yasawi order.
The study examines the compositional structure of the manuscript, the usage of Qur’anic verses and devotional formulas, as well as the semantic aspects of Sufi terminology and symbolic elements. Special attention is given to the trust (amanat) of Arslan Bab, the influence of the school of Khoja Yusuf Hamadani, and the institutional role of Sufi Muhammad Danishmand within the Yasawi silsila.
The research concludes that the manuscript represents a comprehensive source reflecting not only the spiritual and ideological system of the Yasawi order but also its historical memory, genealogical legitimation, and structure of Sufi education. Furthermore, it demonstrates the transregional influence of the Yasawi tradition across Central Asia and Iran.
